Colostomy Diet Tips

A colostomy is a surgical procedure in which a loop of colon is pulled to the abdominal skin to create a stoma. A pouch is placed on top of the stoma to collect waste products. The colon may get damaged or affected by diseases in certain cases.

Colostomy diet is recommended if the patient has severe problems involving the large intestines. Colostomy surgery is performed mainly on patients suffering from diverticulitis and bowel cancer. If the rectum is removed completely, a permanent colostomy is recommended. Small pouches that develop on colon walls cause stomach pain, swelling of the digestive system, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Typically, the patient receives IV fluids for three to four days after a colostomy. After that, a person can try clear liquids such as juice and soup broth and easy to digest foods. Foods that cause odors or gas should be avoided. Foods that can thicken the stool and minimize odors after colostomy include:

Colostomy diet tips:

Use 4-6 smaller meals per day:

Taking the right kinds of foods frequently is beneficial to the patient. It results in better absorption and manageable excretion since it’s divided throughout the day.

Chew foods completely:

Chew at least 25 times before swallowing although it depends on the type of food. Chew everything until it turns into liquid.

Avoid fibers:

Intake of oatmeals should be regulated. They can make the stool firm which is not good for a recovering colon.

Make liquids your friend:

7-10 glasses of water are very beneficial for colostomy patients.

Go for soft foods:

Slow cooked foods and blended drinks are gentle on the stomach and their absorption is easier.

The entire secret is determining which diet work best when combined properly. The diet is highly effective if the patient sticks to the rules and requirements.
