What is a pre-colonoscopy diet?

It’s the food that patients can eat before they undergo Colonoscopy examination. Colonoscopy is a medical procedure where the internal hollow organs of the body were examined especially the colon or the large intestine. It’s often used to diagnose colon cancer where they can visually examine it using fiber optic camera on a flexible tube that passes through the anus. When the patient is undergoing a colonoscopy examination, they were advised to eat low-fiber foods 3 days before the examination. A study found that patients who ate low-fiber foods before the exam didn’t suffer from any negative side effects like cramping pain and abdominal swelling during the examination. Here are some foods and drinks that the patient can take 3 days before the examination:    

  • Drinks or beverages like milk, hot chocolate or cocoa, tea, fruit juice without pulp, soda and carbonated beverages
  • Canned or cooked vegetable without peel and seeds
  • Dairy products like cheese, cream, buttermilk, yogurt, margarine, mayonnaise, and sour cream
  • Foods made from refined flour like pasta, bread, muffins, roll bread, bagel, and plain crackers
  • Whole grain such as white rice, low- fiber cereal, and oatmeal
  • Lean meats like skinless chicken, turkey, lamb, lean pork, fish, eggs, and tofu
  • Ripe fruits without peel and seeds

Here are some foods and drinks that the patient needs to avoid 3 days before the examination:

  • Raw vegetables with skin and seeds, corn, green peas, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, lima beans, and onions
  •  Fruit or vegetable juice with pulp and beverages with red or purple dye

  • Fatty foods
  • Tough meat

Just follow the pre-colonoscopy diet prescribed by the Gastroenterologists or the doctor who performed colonoscopy for the faster examination and negative side effects will be avoided in the future.
